Lyon weather is classified as temperate, the city’s location on the Rhône Valley strongly influences its patterns. What this effectively means is that cold winds blowing in from the Alps and warm breezes arriving from the south Mediterranean have an immerse effect on the disposition of weather in Lyon. Another distinct feature of Lyon weather is its unpredictability; despite the fact the city is blessed with four easily distinguished seasons, rainfall can appear at anytime throughout the year, dampening even the finest of days. As a general rule though, summers in Lyon are hot, autumns mild, the winters cold and springtime is dominated by an abundance of fair weather conditions.

Spring

Lyon weather during the springtime is characterized by pleasantly warm but wet days. Average daily temperatures are between 10°C to around15°C, occasionally reaching 20°C.

Summer

Lyon weather during the summer months (June through to September) is typified by warm to hot sunny conditions. As a matter of fact, on an average Lyon experiences 2,000 hours of sunshine annually. Daily average temperatures rise to a maximum of 30°C; July and August are the hottest months sending temperatures to soar to well above 35°C. The best time to visit Lyon is September when the days are warm but not unbearably hot. Another distinct feature of weather in Lyon during the summer season is the common appearance of severe thunderstorms.

Autumn

Weather in Lyon during the autumn months is pleasantly mild and comfortable. The majority of precipitation is experienced in autumn with November being the wettest month. Freezing strong winds blowing in from the Alps occasionally move into Lyon as early as September, resulting in unreasonably low temperatures for the season, with snowfall always remaining a possibility.

Winter

Lyon weather during winter is characterized by cold, misty, and icy conditions; this is mainly due to the city’s closeness to the Alps. Average daily temperatures are between 4°C and 7°C, but chilling winds can make the weather in Lyon seem much colder. Hail and snowfall is common during winter as is fine mist that masks the Fourvière hillside and historic architecture of the old city. When visiting Lyon do not underestimate the effects of the chilling winds and plummeting temperatures, so layers of warm clothing should be packed.
